The Rosedale Landscaping/Snow and Ice Management Team began to develop its award winning foundation back in 1989 cleaning vacant lots to help improve the quality of life in the Rosedale-Tioga community. After cleaning, clearing and greening hundreds of acres of overgrown lots, alleys, sidewalks, and other areas with historic levels of debris, the youth asked to develop a landscaping service. They would not only learn a trade but the youth behind them without employment and training opportunities would have a place to turn to be developed and in a safe culturally sensitive environment.
The youth, 18-25 years of age took the opportunity very seriously. They organized themselves and assigned tasks based on their individual talents. They spent countless hours in the Carnegie Business Library in downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland, toured landscaping companies and purchased how to books regarding landscaping. The outcome of their methodic work was a very simplistic business plan for which they gained print media attention.
Following a newspaper article about the youth’s project, in 1998 the youth were contacted by a realtor and following significant discussion and planning the youth entered into their first contract to maintain a 16 acre site. The youth are still contracting with that realtor and several others year round. Their first mass installation was 40,000 heirloom bulbs in 18 beds at three depths. The youth won a award for the successful installation of the complex project.
Although there are philanthropic opportunities tied to the youth’s year round enterprise the youth not only work to meet but seek to exceed industry standards and to perform beyond the expectation of their customer whether they are working on a commercial or residential site. The team has earned the brand of being Like Clock work; Consistently Timely, Thorough, Reliable and Affordable. The team is a good manager of time, materials, finances, and maintaining ongoing communications throughout the project no matter how big or small.
